Merger petition proceeds

A petition drive - aimed at asking voters to determine the question of dissolving the village - has crossed the finish line.

Village resident Joyce Hatton, who launched the petition campaign in March with about 25 volunteers, said Sunday night that she has 349 signatures – more than the 306 necessary to put the issue on the Aug. 7 ballot.

She wanted to collect in excess of the required number by the May 15 deadline to cover any unqualified signatures or discrepancies during certification.

“I'm thrilled,” Hatton said Sunday. “When I realized this was over, I celebrated. My goals now are to educate people and get them to the polls.”

It will take two-thirds of village voters to vote “yes” to dissolve the village and have it be absorbed into Spring Lake Township. The village is within township boundaries, and although they share some services and amenities, each municipality has separate governing bodies and tax rates.

Village residents pay both township and village taxes.

Hatton noted that in her situation, taxes on her waterfront condominium would be about $1,200 less without the 11.66 annual village millage. Village millage rates have declined slightly during the past several years.

The township tax rate is 0.965 mills.

SL Village residents should think carefully before voting to merge with SL Township.
In 2010, the SLT Supervisor and Clerk salaries were increased by 67% and 83% respectively, even though electors had approved lower salaries in 2009. The public was not allowed to vote on these huge increases.
In February of this year, SLT Trustees approved a 33% pay raise for themselves.
What public sector worker gets that kind of increase?!
Be careful what you wish for SL Village!
