A professional search consultant hired by the village selected seven candidates out of 47 applications for his "short list."
Besides the two candidates who requested confidentiality, the list includes:
— James R. Freed, who currently manages both the Village of Lakeview and city of Stanton in Montcalm County under a shared-service agreement.
— Michael T. Burns, assistant manager for the city of Fenton.
— Sam Janson, assistant to the city manager in Grand Haven.
— Howard Fink, town administrator in Merrillville, Ind.
— Chris A. Yonker, former manager of the city of Wayland.
Both Janson and Yonker have local ties. Yonker has served as the assistant to Grand Haven City Manager Pat McGinnis since November 2009. Yonker is a Spring Lake High School graduate.
Council will meet next Monday evening to decide which 3-5 candidates they would like to interview, but it is unknown when those interviews will happen.
Originally scheduled for June 2, consultant Bill Baldridge advised council on Monday to hold off on interviews if the question of consolidating the village with Spring Lake Township makes the Aug. 7 ballot.
Village resident Joyce Hatton launched a petition drive in March and announced last weekend that she has surpassed the 306 necessary signatures needed to get the issue on the ballot. The signatures will need to be certified as valid after the May 15 filing deadline.
Village President Jim MacLachlan said council would decide on interview dates after speaking to village attorney Robert Sullivan.
