The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality said pollutants are expected to be in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range today. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s in Grand Haven today and Friday, and 90s in some other West Michigan locations.

The alert area includes Ottawa, Muskegon, Kent, Allegan, Barry, Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, Kalamazoo, Mason, Oceana and Van Buren counties.

People and businesses are urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone formation. These activities include refueling vehicles or topping off gas tanks, using gas-powered lawn equipment and charcoal lighter fluid. Positive activities include car pooling, biking to work, delaying or combining errands, and using water-based paints.

Active children and adults with respiratory diseases, such as asthma, are recommended to limit prolonged outdoor exertion today.
