MAILBAG: How do I 'opt out' smart meters?

Several readers have asked how to opt out of Consumers Energy's smart meter program.

ANSWER:

A commenter on our website who calls himself "Boater" asked this: "I have looked at the Consumers Energy website searching for the repercussions of 'opting out' of the SmartMeter and I cannot find any information available. It states in this article, 'The Consumers Energy website has information for customers who want to opt out.' Please provide a link to the actual information, because when I put 'opt out SmartMeter' in their search, the only thing that comes up is the technology and cheerleading for the SmartMeter. I'm not interested in big brother installing a meter inside my home."

I searched the Consumers Energy website, too, and could not find any "opt out" information. So I queried the company, and received this reply from Roger Morgenstern, the Smart Grid communications coordinator for Consumers Energy:

"Yes, we are in the process of updating some of our web content, including a dedicated toll-free number for smart meter-related questions. Now, our customers can call our regular toll-free number, 1-800-477-5050, and request opting out of a smart meter. It will be noted directly on their account.

"While there is not a charge at this time for opting out, the Michigan Public Service Commission (our regulator) will be reviewing our anticipated costs of administering the opt out program and may decide to allow a customer charge for opting out."

Thank you for the follow up! I will contact Consumers and discuss opting out of their new program. I will inform you about charges that may occur.
