Fishing banned at Tanglefoot

Council has banned fishing on the docks because of complaints from slip tenants about disrespect and damage to their watercraft.

“We had received one written complaint and some verbal complaints from folks who had rented boat slips,” Village Manager Chris Burns said. “People were snagging their canvas tops, littering in their boats, smoking and flicking their (cigarette) butts into the boats.”

Approval by council Monday night was unanimous. The ban will become effective as soon as signs are made and in place, likely within two weeks, Burns said.

The restriction is seasonal, so fishing will be allowed again after Oct. 15.

The boat slips rent for $900 each per season.

“The tenants — rightfully so — felt people were not being respectful of their property,” Burns said. “Council thought it was a fair request.”

Fishing is still allowed at the end of Park Street, immediately west of Tanglefoot; at all village street ends; and also off the docks at nearby Mill Point Park.
