Lucille of Spring Lake Township asked, "Who or what sends the signal that opens and closes the swing bridge for the train that crosses the Grand River (in Grand Haven) twice a day?"

ANSWER:

CSX no longer runs that line, so we checked with the Michigan Department of Transportation. MDOT spokesman John Richard said the line is owned by Michigan Shore Railroad, a division of Rail America.

"The bridge is operated by the train crews," Richard added.

According to the company's website, Michigan Shore Railroad operates a line with more than 7,000 cars per year, primarily to ship sand and chemicals.
