The Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based company said it plans to add more than 52,700 seasonal workers around the country — averaging about 41 employees at each of its 1,146 stores. Michigan's 45 stores will end up hiring an estimated 1,845 employees, said Vicki Shamion, who is Kohl's senior vice president, public relations, social marketing and community relations.

The announcement seems to indicate Kohl's, America's third-largest department store chain, expects a stronger Christmas holiday season than last year. Consumer spending is expected to be 4.2 percent higher than last year's, according to an analysis of economic and spending data by retail consulting firm Kurt Salmon.

Kohl's employed about 142,000 people as of Jan. 28, with 30,000 working full-time and 112,000 part-time, according to a company filing.
