Students gather for early-morning prayer

Students across the country gathered around their school's flagpole and prayed Wednesday morning during the annual "See You at the Pole."

The event allows students to come together before school and pray. A group of about 30 students, staff and area church leaders gathered in front of Spring Lake High School.

The gatherings are student-led events, but organized by First Priority of the Lakeshore. They were also held at Grand Haven High School and area middle schools.

The Spring Lake High School students divided into grade levels and began in smaller prayer groups. They then joined together as one large group and held hands around the flagpole. Each person took a turn to pray out loud.

Ben Cooley, the youth pastor for First Baptist Church of Spring Lake, said their role is to provide support for students.

“For us, we believe faith is a big part of their life,” he said. “It really is an honor to work with those students.”

Just to update the article, I know that there were students gathered at many of the elementary schools too.

I just can not believe this is still aloud at public schools, I know GH is primarily christian, but this may make children of other faith feel really uncomfortable. Oh ya and it's unconstitutional!

Mr. Conservative

children of other faith can go away. This is not unconstitutional.

Other faiths are actually allowed to hold a gathering like this, if they choose to do so, according to the Equal Access Law which was passed in 1984.

"Equal Access Act is a federal Act passed to compel federally-funded secondary schools to provide equal access to extracurricular clubs. The Act provides that it shall be unlawful for any public secondary school which receives Federal financial assistance and which has a limited open forum to deny equal access or a fair opportunity to, or discriminate against, any students who wish to conduct a meeting within that limited open forum on the basis of the religious, political, philosophical, or other content of the speech at such meetings."

So the constitution was not violated at all.

Confessing to God through praying is a wonderful way of being happy! It gives intense peace and calmness in our mind so we should go for it frequently. Good luck for the participants of the event.
