Locks of Love for Daddy

A nervous Izzy Geyer hopped into the stylist chair on Wednesday. The 5-year-old Spring Lake girl sat patiently while Jennifer Rykse-Young cut about 14 inches off her hair at Reds Salon in Grand Haven.

The Jeffers Elementary School kindergartner said she's donating the cut hair to Locks of Love.

“It’s for people who are sick and taking medicines, and their hair falls out," she explained.

Victoria Geyer of Spring Lake said her daughter has been planning to donate her hair for about a year, but she became more serious about the donation after her father died Sept. 24 after a long battle with cancer.

Although her husband didn’t lose his hair during cancer treatments, Victoria said they talked about kids who lose their hair from it.

“I’m excited for her, and proud of her for donating it,” Victoria said.

Even though her late husband wasn’t there to see Izzy’s hair cut, Victoria said he knew she was planning to do it.

“He would have been proud, too,” Victoria said.

Rykse-Young, who has known Victoria for about 12 years, gave Izzy flowers before the little girl pushed aside her nerves and had her hair cut.
