The Midtown Center in Holland was filled with excitement Friday as students performed during the Southwest Michigan Community Recreation & Leisure Chorale Competition.
Community Based Instruction students from the Ottawa County district competed against teams from the Allegan Area Education Service Agency, Kalamazoo Regional Education Service Agency and the Barry Intermediate School District.
When all the singing and dancing ended, judges collaborated and decided the winners:
— Most Entertaining: Barry Intermediate School District for performing “Hakuna Matata” and “We Will Rock You.”
— Best Use of Movement: Allegan Area Educational Service Agency for performing “The Climb” and “We Go Together.”
— Most Creative: Ottawa Area Intermediate School District for performing “Singing in the Rain” and “You Are My Sunshine.”
— Best Overall and Most Dramatic: Kalamazoo Regional Education Service Agency for performing “On Broadway” and “What’s Going On.”
Robert Thompson was a little nervous when he stepped onto the Midtown Center stage, but that went away after he spotted his teacher.
Thompson, a Grand Haven CBI student, said it felt good to perform on the stage with classmates.
“It was a blast,” he said.
Thompson and other students from the Ottawa County program practiced six times before donning rain ponchos and using umbrellas as props during the competition.
