Some may call Kathy Veurink a "Kath-of-all trades." She is an accomplished seamstress, quilter, floral arranger, furniture refinisher and card designer.
She recently added consignment shop owner to her skill set.
The Spring Lake Township woman opened Gotta Have It at 815 Pine St. in Ferrysburg this month. The space was most recently the home of the Water's Edge consignment shop, which moved to Savidge Street in Spring Lake.
Veurink owned a quilt shop in New Era until she sold it several years ago to take care of her ailing mother. After her mother died, Veurink took a year off and traveled around the country to visit friends and family.
“When I came back home, I knew I wanted to open a shop and I knew I wanted it to be local,” said Veurink, who started working as a floral designer when she was 16. “I've always loved crafts. I love to paint furniture. I didn't want to go back into just flowers or just quilts.”
Veurink teamed up with her niece, Sarah Herd, who runs the business' website and monitors item values. They hit estate and garage sales, and they are building a steady stream of consigners on a 60/40 split.
“We're such a hoot together,” Veurink said. “If the clothing is our size, we try everything on. Where can you go to have this much fun? I have wonderful ladies as customers, and you never know what they're going to bring in and you never know what they're going to buy.”
