Obama opposes Michigan's right-to-work legislation

President Barack Obama has repeated his opposition to right-to-work laws as the Republican-controlled Michigan Legislature adopted the union-curbing measure.

The Michigan House and Senate voted Thursday to approve a bill barring unions from collecting mandatory fees from non-members. Republican Gov. Rick Snyder also endorsed it Thursday.

White House spokesman Matt Lehrich said Obama has long opposed right to work laws, "and he continues to oppose them now."

The spokesman said the president believes the economy "is stronger when workers get good wages and good benefits, and he opposes attempts to roll back their rights."

Lehrich said Michigan workers' role in helping reviving the U.S. auto industry shows "how unions have helped build a strong middle class and a strong American economy."

It's disappointing that Mr. Obama once again has attempted to interfere with the sovereignty of state rights in his latest show of support of his friends, the Union Bosses. This interference needs to stop now. Mr. Obama should do the job he was hired to do and address the looming Federal Budget Crisis. Michigan does not need nor want his opinion of her state laws.

Obama is not interfering with the State's. If he was, he would block try to block it. Saying you do not agree with something is not interfering my friend. Obama's job he is hired to do, is get people back to work and have a healthy economy. This is what he is trying to make happen with a stronger middle class. You seem smart enough to understand this logic. You seem like a person who would disagree with everything Obama does.

"You seem like a person who would disagree with everything Obama does." Which begs the question, so what? There is much for one to disagree with where this president is concerned. That one might disagree with everything he does ( in the implementation of policy that impacts the public) while interesting, seems illrelevant in a critique of a poster's submission.

Do all you conservatives agree with how he has treated gun laws? Should he be tougher?

The question at hand isn't about what he has or has not done related to the lawful ownership of firearms, though that seems more a state and local issue than a federal one. Whether the author disagrees with everything the president does or just half of it, is illrelevant. That's what I was discussing in relation to what you said.

Do anyone still believe..or ever believe...that the things Snyder does is for best interest of the people? Or to create jobs?

gh momma

Absolutely... that is what Right-to-work is all about... bringing jobs to Michigan! 100% in support!

Snyder does nothing in the interest of the people... Only cares about his political agenda.

The governor has stated he will sign legislation that will afford me options when choosing a work environment that is a fit for me. And the problem with that is?

I ask BTL2A and lakeshore12 what has Obama done in the interest of the American people? He has spent more than any President in history. On what? Nothing more than entitlement programs for the lazy that don't feel they need to work and support themselves. Of course he is going to fight for the unions, where do you think all their union dues go? People are just a little upset they might actually have to work for their money, instead of having the union protect their lazy ways of working. Yes I have been in a union (more than one) and witnessed it.

Just because someone doesn't agree with Snyder doesn't automaticaly make them a supporter of obama. You response had nothing to do with my simple statement.
Do you really believe his intentions are to create jobs?

Yes I do believe he is trying to create jobs. If a business owner has the choice between union and no union, they are going with no union. Unions have their place, but for the most part, they have outlived the original intentions.

Eeveryone knows there are some people that are protected by unions that shouldn't be, but it works both ways. I've personally been let go from a small company because the owners friends kid was out of college and needed a job.
Do you think that is right?
A union would of protected that. There are some benefits to unions.

No I do not agree with you getting let go. That is the owners choice and was not ethical one bit. Just a fact of life unfortunately.

My company breaks both state and federal labor laws quite often, as well as put us in danger quite often as well (unfortunately OSHA has no jurisdiction over us). While most people in my profession are in a union and have it quite good, my particular company is not union. They get away with this crap on a daily basis, and there is not much we as employees can do (except find another job that pays near what I am making now, which is extremely hard in Michigan).

While I agree many unions have outlived their purpose, there are some professions where the corporations have absolutely no care for their employees, both financially and safety-wise.

Heck, I was recently required to drive my own personal car over 250 miles per day, for over two months with my own gas (no compensation) while my work truck was in the shop to get a new engine. The company truck also has a shattered windshield that is impossible to see out of in the sun; I have been reporting it for over a year, and they refuse to fix it. Companies like the one I work for truly need to be union.

Also, is it just me or do the people posting comments in the tribune just complain and moan about absolutely everything? It's never anything positive. It's always blaming the city government (which growing up on the east side of the state, i can tell you is FAR better than any government on the east side), or its blaming Obama for EVERYTHING, even if it has nothing to do with politics. It's not just the democrats, it's the republicans as well. They are all scumbags.

Instead of being made to suffer all this, why don't you go find another job, or better yet, create your own job?

I have been looking, but even though I make less than the average in my trade, it is still well above any jobs I have found so far on this side of the state.

Mary Washington

How ironic that your username is "ohwell" and you're preaching to people being lazy? I normally wouldn't take personal shots on here, but you've decided to make such a broad statement calling people in unions lazy that you have now opened yourself up to have your statments critiqued. Unions are not entitlement programs and anyone who would say so, and who claims to have been part of a union, was just in their respective job collecting a paycheck, not really understanding what the union was actually doing for you. Since you know so much, and since you posed the question as if you knew the answer, I'd like you to tell us all where the union dues go. What has Obama spent more money on, well I don't really know that he has spent more than any other President, but if he has it has been to clean up mess that George Bush and his cronies left in their wake. Your general statements need to be researched a little more, and not just thrown out as general statements that you are regurgitating from poor reporting news outlets, that only give general statements with no real research or FACTS. Also, I have never met a person who has ever been upset about having to work for their money. I am not in a union, but I happen to be close with many people who are, and I can tell you that not one of them display lazy ways of working as you call it. I have to ask you in general, what really is your motivation behind these blind statements? Are you jealous because you have a crappy job, and you don't like that others have jobs where they need protection from being taken advantage of? Or is it just the opposite where you have a great job, and just feel like spewing out venom? Perhaps you don't have a job at all, maybe YOU'RE lazy, you know what they say, it takes one to know one.

I worked in more than one union shop, and seen it first hand. I never said all union workers are lazy, but they (unions) do tend to breed laziness. Why? Because they protect the people and fight for their jobs back when they get fired for not doing their jobs. Do you think is right? Typical lib, still blaming Bush for Obama's spending. So Obamacare was Bush's fault? That's funny. Along with all the other stuff Obama is spending money on. I don't think Bush was in favor of entitlement programs. Just Google debt clock and see what your Obama is doing to us. As for me being in the union jobs, I took them to get myself through school to have the six figure job I have today. I worked hard at every place I worked, union or not.

Check your facts.

Thank you Ms. Washington.

Oh fun, are we playing the list game?? I hate to say it, but, that is a terrible one.

I could poke holes in about half of those without even batting an eye.
Ordered reviews...great. What are the results and what has been changed?
Announced intentions... again, great. Results? When was he going to start?
Put the ball in play? Common now.
Paid for his own decorations? Well if that doesn't make me feel secure I don't know what will?!?
War policy that limits areal bombing??
Oh, and what was that about drones being cleared for use in US?
Hey... Thanks to the Freedom of Information act on that one. I personally really like the thought of drones flying over us and seeing our every move if they want. Freedom?
Loan guarantees? Again, with what money? Mine?
Hmm, money. I stopped counting at 17 things on your list that talked about spending more. At some point I would like to keep some of my own money I have worked hard for.
Increasing opportunities for Americans? (58) What would that be? Please tell me. Maybe you could spit up someone else's list for us to choke on.

I am glad your copy paste functions are working properly.

This is commentary from me, a middle aged single dad, a manager at a local company in West MI. I found the some information online, the rest from my brain.

My paste function is also operating:

That is a good (read bad) list.

Ctrl C (I'm guilty now too.)

There are too many things that have been followed through on that list to list. Increased student loans? Really? He (your Messiah) has capped the amounts that can be borrowed for student loans. Guantanamo Bay is still open, oh and this is the end of the 2012. Just in case your Ph.D. that you got your list from hasn't informed you of that. Just see the post below to see how your "list" is flawed.

Check your "facts".

Let's just "check" one that you have offered through you prolific cutting and pasting, shall we?

"Here is a list of accomplishments of Mr. Obama (the President of the United States of America where, I am guessing, you also live). It is from 2010 and I know the list has grown since then. Please let us all know if any of these accomplishments are against the American people?

1. Ordered all federal agencies to undertake a study and make recommendations for ways to cut spending
2. Ordered a review of all federal operations to identify and cut wasteful spending and practices"

Pleae review this link and tell me just exactly where President Obama has recommended, let alone initiated, a "cut" in "wasteful spending and practices"?

I love how a thread on unions goes from union-bashing to Obama-bashing....we have to have something to "bash", no? Let's add this to the "list": 1.) The CBO projects that if the 2013 Obama budget is enacted, the total deficit reduction under Obama would make a 4-year total of nearly $500 billion, making the deficit shrink to $1.5 Trillion to $977 Billion. This was accomplished in part through the February, 2010 Pay-As-You-Go Act signed by Obama and a Democrat Congress - # of Repubs who signed - ZERO. 2.) According to the Wall St. Journal Market Watch, Obama is responsible for the lowest gov't spending in 60 years. Clinton is 2nd. Highest - Reagan and Bush II. The last Repub president who was able to cut the deficit was Eisenhower. Renegade and Vlad - you really need to get over this chronic and unfounded hate for Obama. At least put a muzzle on it - looking too much like sour grapes.

"I love how a thread on unions goes from union-bashing to Obama-bashing...."

Obama and unions are virtually indistinguishable from each other from a policy standpoint, no?

"we have to have something to "bash", no? Let's add this to the "list": 1.) The CBO projects that if the 2013 Obama budget is enacted, the total deficit reduction under Obama would make a 4-year total of nearly $500 billion, making the deficit shrink to $1.5 Trillion to $977 Billion"

Don't you feel even a modicum of shame putting forth a line of reasoning that implies Obama is a "budget cutter" when since his first budget, he has had trillion dollar+ annual deficits and even by your admission, his proposed budget doesn't even get us back to the deficits president Bush was running.

Obama creates a deficit unparalleled in our nation's history and you want to give him credit or "cutting" it to a point that simply puts him on par with other big spending presidents?

"The last Repub president who was able to cut the deficit wasEisenhower. Renegade and Vlad - you really need to get over this chronic and unfounded hate for Obama. At least put a muzzle on it - looking too much like sour grapes"

Unfounded hate? If you cannot understand the concerns that many well-meaning citizens have regarding Mr. Obama (expressed with great regularity in these fora), you are either a rabid partisan who is unmoved by fact, or simply oblivious to said fact. Which is it?

Neither. Actually, I have to ask you the same question. I don't know where you've been, but folks like you have such "firmly held beliefs", you don't know what to do with the facts. If you can't accept the facts from independent and conservative sources alike (CBO and WSJ respectively), then so be it. The fact is that Obama is one of the few presidents in recent history to reduce the deficit (doubled under 8 years of Reagan); the stock market soared in record numbers under his watch (6,000's when he took office to current 13,000's - one of the best performances since 1900). Unemployment continues a downward trend, job creation going up. Meanwhile Obama won, the GOP is imploding (start reading something other than foxnews.com or listening to Rush), and it's time to stop this irrelevant and stupid Obama-bashing - let's move on with moving this country forward from the Bush Great Recession. Unions=workers=middle class=Obama - you are correct! Corporations=corporate earnings highest in recorded history=outsourcing wealth, jobs, business overseas=GOP. I do admit I am always mystified why folks like you persist in the "great regularity of concerns...regarding Obama" (i.e. denial and delusion) in the face of facts that tell a different story. Hence my statement regarding "union-bashing to Obama-bashing" - you folks always need a bogey-man. Let's start seeing the glass 1/2 full and start thinking of ways you can help your community instead of digging the ditch deeper with "untruths".
