Official: 27 dead in Conn. school shooting

A shooting at a Connecticut elementary school Friday left 27 people dead, including 18 children, an official said.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity for the same reason, said the gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown was killed and apparently had two guns.

Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter was fine.

"It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America," he said.

The superintendent's office said the district had locked down schools in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City. Schools in neighboring towns also were locked down as a precaution.

A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher had been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital. Andrea Rynn, a spokeswoman at the hospital, said it had three patients from the school but she did not have information on the extent or nature of their injuries.

State police said Newtown police called them around 9:40 a.m. A SWAT team was among the throngs of police to respond.

A photo posted by The Newtown Bee newspaper showed a group of young students — some crying, others looking visibly frightened — being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other's shoulders.

Mergim Bajraliu, 17, heard the gunshots echo from his home and raced to check on his 9-year-old sister at the school. He said his sister, who was fine, heard a scream come over the intercom at one point. He said teachers were shaking and crying as they came out of the building.

"Everyone was just traumatized," he said.

The White House said President Barack Obama was notified of the shooting.

This is horrifying beyond words. 27 people, including 18 little children gunned down while attending kindergarten and older in a rural village. It was reported the gunman walked in with two guns and fired over 100 rounds. If only the teachers and children had been packing heat, this truly heartbreaking tragedy would have all been averted.

"If only the teachers and children had been packing heat, this truly heartbreaking tragedy would have all been averted."

Please tell me Lanivan that this is your idea of a sick joke?? Kindergarteners packing heat? Your kingdom for an EDIT button about now I'd bet?

It's even worse than I originally thought. The 20-year old gunman had four weapons. 20 innocent children gone in less than a few minutes. Unimaginable. Yet the glorification of violence through video games, movies, and guns - lots of guns - persists and increases every year. States like Texas and Oklahoma allow carrying guns into schools and churches. A similar law is sitting on Snyder's desk as I write this.

Gun lovers all over the internet are saying this tragedy would never have happened if the teachers and students could carry guns (yes - in Texas, students can bring guns to campus). They think having more guns in the school would have stopped a man bringing four guns into a school, wearing a vest, and firing off over 100 rounds in a matter of a few minutes would be deterred it there were even more guns in the classrooms.

A gun dealer in Oklahoma was interviewed after the open carry gun law went into effect. He said people were putting away their small pistols, and buying larger weapons with longer barrels and magazines that hold additional rounds. Gun permits are at an all-time high after the election - again - because people are convinced government (Obama) is coming after them with a gun. No - a person on the street with a gun is coming after you.

Vlad - no, I don't think I'm clever. I am once again amazed at the rationalizations people make to avoid the consequences of living in and promoting a violent society.

I will await more information about the shooter and his, and his family's interaction with government authorities before I say anything more, but Lanivan, your willingness to exploit this tragedy is both disgusting and disheartening - I thought I was dealing with a sentient human.

Lanivan

Your out-of-control personal attacks on my character, drawing attention from the issues of gun control and a society permeated with violence, is obscene.

Your exploitation of this most profoundly wrenching massacre of children by focusing on self-righteous indignation is troubling. Within hours of the tragedy yesterday, people were making statements blaming this tragedy on gun control advocates, including Larry Pratt, the director of Gun Owners of America, and Jase Bolger, Michigan Speaker of the House. Their premise is that somehow if only the teachers had guns in their desks, they could have stopped the gunman. Research shows the exact opposite - taken by surprise, often in the dark or in a crowd, almost always people are unable to return fire quickly enough to stop the killing by a determined gunman, armed with semi-automatic guns with hundreds of rounds that can kill lots of people in mere seconds.

Once again, Michigan has made national news, as a bill that will loosen gun control laws even more by allowing guns in schools and churches sits on Snyder's desk. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/1...

As our nation, permeated with violence as entertainment, allows any civilian legal access to military guns, becomes a country - and a state - of vigilantes.

THIS is disgusting and disheartening. Shame on you, Vlad.

People who read these comments know who is exploiting this tragedy for their own personal political agenda.

Lanivan

Strange how you equate speaking out in grief, calling for a conversation for sensible national and state gun policy, which is currently happening all across the country, as exploitation for a personal political agenda. But you seem to have no problem with our government leaders, like Jase Bolger, blaming common sense gun policy advocates.

My concern is not what people reading these comments think, but how we can honor those killed yesterday and the past year, by assault weapons in seven mass shootings. When is it time to say, enough?

EXPLOIT

Dem. lawmaker: To get gun control, Obama must ‘exploit’ shooting

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, who represents portions of New York City, said he was encouraged by Mr. Obama’s statement on Friday afternoon that the mass shooting, which claimed the lives of 20 young children, requires “meaningful action” by Congress, but hopes those words turn into concrete legislation.

Mr. Nadler was asked whether the Newtown tragedy could be the turning point in many Democrats’ longstanding struggle to enact stronger gun laws.

“I think we will be there if the president EXPLOITS it, and otherwise we’ll go on to the next” incident, Mr. Nadler said. (emphasis supplied)

Mr. Nadler joins New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and others who quickly turned their attention to gun control laws in the hours following Friday’s shooting, one of the worst campus massacres in U.S. history.

You are simply following the lead of your Peeps - at least they own up to their strategy.

Vladtheimp

This is unspeakable, both for the grief for the parents and families of the children and adults slaughtered by this lunatic, and because some people will exploit any tragedy to advance their own political agenda - let no good crisis go to waste - eh Lanivan?

What is really sad is that you probably are proud of this comment, being so clever and all. You are a real piece of work.

Here is a letter from the mother of this mass murderer when this mental case was 13 years old. Open and notorious threats to kill his mother back then and nothing was done.(http://gawker.com/5968818/i-am-a...) Why wasn't anything done?, liberalism....another mental disorder. We cannot prosecute this piece trash because this would be discriminatory against the mentally ill. So, lets medicate this kid and attempt to UNDERSTAND him and his needs. Every doctor, social worker, and psychiatrist that wrote a perscription for this kid should be investigated. If rubber stamp perscriptions were written for this clearly, unstable individual then, unleash the warrants for accessory to murder charges against everyone of them.

You freakin' nitwit...you didn't even read the article did you? It's not written by Adam Lanza's mother, it was written by another women with a 13 year old child with mental health issues! My god man, if you're going to spew your uneducated, generally unintelligible venom at least try and get the basic facts straight! I'm thinking you probably have some mental issues of your own that you should be dealing with before you snap!

Great use of facts proclaiming your diagnoses..... Dr.Less!
