Pope names 8 Detroit-area monsignors

The leader of 1.3 million Roman Catholics in southeastern Michigan said the pope has promoted eight Detroit-area priests to the rank of monsignor.

Archbishop Allen Vigneron announced Thursday that Pope Benedict XVI made the appointments.

The Archdiocese of Detroit plans a prayer service Jan. 23 at Sacred Heart Seminary to mark the occasion.

The archdiocese said 34 of its about 400 active and retired priests hold the title monsignor.

Those receiving the title are the Revs. Ronald Browne, John Hall, Timothy Hogan, Michael Hrydziuszko, Thomas Johnson, Russell Kohler, Gary Smetanka and Daniel Trapp.
