City Planner Kristin Turkelson is leaving for a job with the City of Grand Rapids. Her last day in Grand Haven is Friday.

The vacancy will be posted online by the end of the week, City Manager Pat McGinnis said, but the job is evolving.

“What we’ll be advertising is a community development manager," he explained. "It’ll be a person running a department that’s more than just a planning department."

McGinnis hopes to have a new city planner by the time the Planning Commission meets in March.

"We will be seeking candidates both internally and externally at the same time,” he said.

Planning Commission Chairman Cecil Bradshaw stressed the need to bring in a strong leader for the department, especially with developments in the pipeline.

“I cannot imagine running a Planning Commission meeting without Kristin or someone with the planning expertise like Kristin,” he said.

McGinnis said a panel would conduct the interview process. It will likely include members of the City Council and Planning Commission, and residents and business people in the city and neighboring communities.

Meanwhile, it's business as usual in the city's planning department, McGinnis said. Assistant City Manager Sam Janson will be the interim planner until a replacement is found.
