Crowd braves cold for hot Pups

Cold weather isn’t a match for a taste of summer food.

Grand Haven’s Pronto Pups stand opened Friday for its annual winter weekend. It will also be open from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Sunday before closing until May.

Owner Carl Nelson said the winter weekend typically draws thousands to the Harbor Drive stand, and it becomes as busy as a Saturday during the Coast Guard Festival.

Proceeds from this weekend will go toward the business, he said.

As word spreads that they're open, Nelson said they often serve a couple of hundred customers in an hour.

“If you come down, be ready to stand in line,” he said.

"Proceeds from this weekend will go toward the business."

Did it use to go to somewhere else? Just seems like an odd thing to put in the story that the profits are going into the owners pocket.

BTL2A: In reply to your question. Yes, the revenue brought in by our winter weekend was used in the past for a local fundraiser. Here is the issue: The first time we open the stand for a winter opener, we did it just to mess with peoples heads. Kinda a fun thing. As the event drew closer, we decided to make it a fund raiser for the GHHS Choir program. (They made it to state but couldn't afford busing) The event went well. The following year many people/organizations threw their names in the hat. The one we selected (GHSH Band uniforms)were very happy. Of those that were not chosen, a few were very disrespectful and voiced their opinion to me so. We've done five fundraising events as part of our winter opener and always chose a different cause each time. Sad fact is, as a business, you create hard feelings with groups for not choosing there cause. Sad , isn't it?. For us living in such a Christian based area, it never ceases to amaze me how narrow minded some of us are. I am not apposed to doing fundraisers in the future. However, there will be a little "Sweat equity" involved with the group to recieve the funds. ie: The choir could have come down and sang to the crowd and worked the line thanking them for their support. As could have the band etc. Any group in the future that we decide to assist will be required to do such. It seems everyo
ne loves the money but doesn't want to put forth any effort. So, at this point, we just open, have a great time with great people from all over the state(s) and we will make a "quiet" donation somewhere locally. Here at Pronto Pup, we never did the fundraiser for our own self advancement or notoriety. I hope you had the chance to come down this weekend. People were having a great time!
