Lake effect snow warning

A winter storm watch for Ottawa County has been canceled and replaced with a lake effect snow warning from 7 p.m. Sunday until 5 p.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids said locally heavy lake-effect snow is expected to develop after sunset Sunday and continue through Monday.

Local accumulations of 6-10 inches are expected through Monday.

Travel will become more difficult Sunday evening and Monday. Rapidly varying visibilities can be expected as the heavy snow bands move inland. Near whiteout conditions may occur at times.

Allow extra time for travel as the roads will become snow covered an slippery. The Michigan Department of Transportation reminds motorists to adjust speeds
based on the conditions, and to take it slow in ice and snow.

The forecast for the Grand Haven area:

Sunday night: Snow showers. Low around 14. Wind chill values as low as minus 1. West-northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of around 4 inches.

Monday: Snow showers. High near 16. Wind chill values as low as minus 6. Blustery, with a west-northwest wind 15 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of around 3 inches.

Monday night: Snow showers. Low around 7. Wind chill values as low as minus 11. Blustery, with a west-northwest wind 17 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around 2 inches.

Hazardous travel conditions will develop Sunday evening and continue into Monday. Visibilities of less than a mile at times.

The forecast for the Grand Haven area:

Saturday night: Snow showers with areas of blowing snow. Low around 18. Windy, with a west-northwest wind 25 to 32 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Sunday: Snow showers likely before 1 pm, then snow showers after 1 pm. Temperature falling to around 19 by 7 am. Blustery, with a west-northwest wind 16 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Sunday night: Snow showers. Low around 13. Wind chill values as low as zero. Northwest wind 14 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of around 4 inches.

Monday: Snow showers. High near 15. Blustery, with a west-northwest wind 14 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of around 3 inches.

Monday night: Snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 9. Blustery. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of around 2 inches.
