Lake-effect snow warning

(UPDATED: 4:09 p.m. Friday) A lake-effect snow warning for Ottawa County remains in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday.

The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids said this afternoon that an additional 5-8 inches of snow is expected tonight and early Saturday. Locally higher amounts are possible.

Snowfall will rapidly increase again tonight, especially after midnight. Snowfall rates could easily exceed an inch per hour, according to the weather bureau.

Winds gusting to 25 mph will create areas of blowing and drifting snow. Winds are expected to subside late tonight.

Wind chills will range from zero to minus 10 tonight.

Impacts:

— Snow-covered roads through Saturday will result in hazardous travel conditions.

— Visibilities will be under a quarter-mile in the heaviest snow bands.

— The threat of frostbite and hypothermia increases Thursday and Friday nights as the wind chill falls below zero.

The forecast for the Grand Haven area:

Tonight: Snow showers. Temperatures rising to around 16 by 3 a.m. Wind chill values as low as minus 3. Breezy, with a west-southwest wind 16 to 21 mph decreasing to 8 to 13 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New snow accumulation of around 5 inches.

Saturday: Snow showers, mainly before 4 p.m. High near 22. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of around 3 inches.

Saturday night: Snow showers, mainly after 7 p.m. Low around 15. West wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of around 2 inches.

Sunday: Snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 22. Northwest wind 7 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New snow accumulation of around 2 inches.
