The funeral Mass for Sgt. Mark Schoonhoven, 38, was held Thursday at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego.
Family friend Don Vernkow told mourners that Schoonhoven had a "1,000-watt smile" and "found his true calling" when he joined the Army.
Schoonhoven was from Plainwell and was part of a unit out of Fort Carson, Colo. He arrived in Afghanistan in November 2012 and was wounded Dec. 15 when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in Kabul.
He died Jan. 20 at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Burial is at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
