SL chess kids win

Ninety-nine students from across West Michigan gathered in Ludington on March 2 for the 58th annual Optimist Youth Chess Tournament, the longest-running scholastic tournament in the state.

Among the winners of four age categories included two Spring Lake students: Joshua VanderMeulen, 14, who took first place in the Middle School Division (grades 6-8); and Callen Carrier, 10, who took fourth place in the Upper Elementary Division (grades 4-5).
