The proposed ordinance was approved at last week's planning and zoning commission meeting, he said, and no one from the public appeared at that time.

The new ordinance will be very close to the state law, he said. Township officials must have two public readings before they can approve the measure — today will be the first public reading.

He said the proposed ordinance is not as restrictive as Holland Township's, which adds location restrictions. Medical marijuana has been an issue for many communities since state lawmakers approved sales between independent cultivators and those with prescriptions for the drug.

Zeeland Township remains one of the few municipalities that still bans the sale of alcohol.

Other topics for today's meeting include a visit from Ottawa County Commissioner Al Dannenberg, discussion on possibly withdrawing the fire department's participation in the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System-Michigan and separate discussions on Fred Meijer Trail and the Drenthe Grove Grant and barbecue.

The Zeeland Township board will meet at 7 p.m. today, 6582 Byron Road. Township Supervisor Glenn Nykamp will offer the invocation. Zeeland Charter Township's website is zeelandtwp.org.
