Festival fireworks get boost

Eye Care One is donating $6,000 to the Spring Lake Heritage Festival as a title sponsor. Some of that money will be used to fund the festival's fireworks finale, which was in danger of being extinguished due to the lack of funding.

Earlier this year, Huntington Bank officials told Village Council the bank could no longer afford to sponsor both the fireworks and the Thursdays at the Point concert series, and left the decision to council members which they would prefer.

In an informal straw vote, council opted for the bank to continue sponsoring the summer concerts. Council members reasoned that, because the concert series runs for three months and the fireworks blast off for only about 20 minutes, Huntington's concert sponsorship dollars would benefit more people.

That left hopes for a fireworks show flickering with no source of ignition.

“It was in jeopardy,” Heritage Festival Committee member Michele Yasenak said.

Eye Care One's donation will allow the festival to light up the sky on June 15. The fireworks will be launched from a barge in the Grand River offshore from Mill Point Park.

“We're still looking for donations to cover all the costs of the fireworks, but they're going to be a go this year," Yasenak said.

Thank you Eye Care One for keeping the fireworks alive - it has been a great addition to the festival for the past few years! Also thank you to Huntington Bank for still supporting the community by at least being able to continue sponsoring the Thursdays at the Point. We live in a great community :)

That's great but what is happening with the Grand Haven Jaycees 4th show? Now that they have no money and haven't paid for last year's show, is anyone stepping up to take it over or will there be no show??

How cool that the SL Heritage Festival is having fireworks again this year! Kudos go out to all the volunteers who make this 6 day local event happen each year. Your dedication is very much appreciated!
