Residents should not come into contact with the Grand River in Ottawa County, until the advisory is lifted.

While flood waters are receding, many residents are still dealing with the damages caused by the recent flood and the big job of clean-up.

The Ottawa County Public Health Department is providing guidance to residents affected by recent flooding. Contact with flood waters may be a health hazard. Possible disease causing contaminants may be present in flood waters causing wells to become contaminated. Flood waters may contain fecal material from overflowing sewage systems, and agricultural and industrial by-products. Persons in contact with flood water should wash hands with soap and disinfected or boiled water before preparing or eating food; after toilet use; after participating in flood cleanup activities and after handling articles contaminated with flood water or sewage.

Private wells need to be checked for signs of contamination. If your well has been submerged by flood waters, or is currently surrounded by flood waters, you must assume that the water sources are contaminated until proven safe. Water quality test kits are available at any Ottawa County Health Department location. Submerged septic systems will not operate properly. Also, please throw away any food that came into contact with flood waters. For any hazardous waste or debris disposal, click HERE for site locations.

If you need information for any other flood health concerns; such as wells, septic systems, food safety, flood clean up, mold prevention, licensed well drillers or septic pumpers, please click HERE or call 616-393-5645.
