"Pressure on Benghazi, the IRS and a leaks investigation are giving new confidence and swagger to Republicans."

I would think this should say "Pressure on Benghazi, the IRS and a leaks investigation are giving President Obama and the Democrats and Liberals a HUGE BLACK EYE." This has nothing to do with giving the Republicans confidence and swagger.. s

dgrissom

I too am offended. I agree with newsblogger. That the Grand Haven Tribune would publish the characterizing that the Washington scandals are "giving new confidence and swagger to Republicans" is not only offensive it is totally inaccurate. These scandals are an offense to all of the American people and should be equally offensive whether one is a Democrat or Republican. I would expect that the "journalist(s)" who submitted this personal commentary for publication be reprimanded and will cease and desist. A journalists' responsibility is to report the news, not to insinuate the news.

Media bias on display N Blogger. As with many ills of the day, this needs to be pointed out as you have done to open citizens eyes. Kudos to you.

How about this for a title? "GOP Pursues Artificial 'Scandals' with Great Vigor While Ignoring Economy".

Wingmaster

LOL Lan, WHO'S pursuing the artificial scandals?http://www.washingtontimes.com/n...

And apparently Steve Miller will than have a case for hostile work environment after his resignation over this artificial scandal! http://www.cnbc.com/id/100741122

Even ole Charlie http://www.politico.com/story/20...

You might have a job opportunity Lan if Jay Carney's runs out of cover for for your personal...oh that's right not supposed to go there am I.

Verification CU2UL hah, hah!

Lanivan

These verifications are somebody's idea of a sick joke...

Yeah - it's a BIG SCANDAL when the biggest tax agency in the world might carefully scrutinize the huge number of tax-exempt applications from the most virulently anti-tax groups in the nation. Boy are those groups mad - being reviewed to make sure they aren't cheating and made to follow the rules - na na boo boo! And the worst thing is think how they must have had to hold their noses when having to portray themselves as 'social welfare' groups - they can barely say the the words 'social' or 'welfare' let alone be one - oh the irony!

By the way, did you read about the US budget deficit is shrinking far faster than expected? No? I didn't think so....we're all too busy reading about the SCANDAL of the century....http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/1...

Wingmaster

.....carefully scrutinize select groups with the words patriot....If Bush would have scrutinized groups that were Democratic related the press would have blew up the issue immediately. Keep twisting Lan, your seeing Chicago politics on display. Why are you going over the cliff on this issue. The Pres even says "he's angry about it". Oooo my that's tough talk. Did you also see he was going to step down before this broke anyway? Some more slight of hand that maybe you didn't see or hear when you were saying na na na boo boo.

Hey maybe somebody can get good money for IRS commissioners seat!

Lanivan

Chicago politics? Nah - this deal is the GOP swiftboating of events to set the stage for the next election. End of story.

The real scandal is that Congress passed these 501c laws that have allowed political groups to get tax exempt status for decades. The real scandal is that IRS internal instructions and procedures have been confusing for decades.
The real scandal is that the Citizens United ruling has opened the floodgates of Big Money to flow unchecked and undetected as to who, where, why, or what throughout the democratic process, and it get tax-exempt status, to boot. We are not in charge anymore, and to blame it on Obama or Chicago politics is the lazy man's way out.

Political groups wishing to be considered tax-exempt must show proof to the IRS that they are not predominantly political. The burden is on them to do the accounting of why they should be considered social welfare over political. It is not the job of the IRS to prove the application is correct. This is the way Congress has structured the law, and now is appalled when the IRS follows the law. The real scandal is that this IRS thing highlights flaws of procedures with little hope of closing loopholes and tightening up requirements.

Meanwhile, there is no head of the IRS. Both the current ex-head and the last ex-head were Bush appointees. Like so many commission and judicial seats, GOP obstruction and blockage has created a huge backlog of seats waiting to be filled. With all the GOP-created angst, drama, gnashing of teeth, and crying "na na boo boo wah wah!" in an attempt to cloud our view of reality, nothing gets done, the national business is neglected. The real scandal is that Obama keeps thinking he's dealing with logical, rational people who have the country's best interest at heart. Guess what? They could care less about you or me - they are doing everything they can to stay in government because they hate it so.

Scream and Shout, Britney Spears.

Wingmaster

You may be right- Billy Joel but I still think you are more Twist and Shout- Beatles

You go and point the evils of the system then act as though your guy is pure as the wind driven snow...ya right...er left!

Lanivan

You know, this Obama thing is of your own making. Am I defending Obama here, or highlighting the real cause of problems that have been in the making for decades? Maybe it's just a case of..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1...

Just like so much in politics, it's Money for Nothing (for us anyway), Dire Straits.

Wingmaster

So am I to conclude you are for less government, which almost always gets the communcation wrong and spending less money for nothing that puts us in these dire straits? Simpler tax code would make this while issue mute too.

Welcome new Tea party member. Please understand your existance will be questioned everyday! Hopefully you are tenatious enough stick by our causes. Please donate to the cause in your tax deductable amount of choice. We are changing our name to the Facts party to hopefully fly under the radar of the politicians in Washington.

Hope and change has brought you here...welcome!

Lanivan

Whoa! How quickly one can be led down the road to perdition. I'm an Independent centrist, remember? I'm afraid the tparty and me would be like a round peg fitting into a square hole. I'll let you choose which is which. The problem is you and others (Vlad) have labeled me incorrectly from the start - Obama actually governs as a centrist, but it doesn't follow the narrative you've been told to follow.

I'm all for a simpler tax code with less opportunity for monkey business. Try to get that concept past your GOP partners in crime and their Big Money handlers! Meanwhile, I think I will join this party = looks like lots more fun......

Lanivan
Wingmaster

Ah, well ya got me pegged wrong as well. Its just the GOP is closer to my overall political leanings. At their worst their the democrat of old, at their best they are the party of Reagan.

The party of your leanings has done nothing but keep the poor down behind the curtain of helping the poor. Best hope they do not finally figure out the gig cause they'll be an ornery bunch to deal with.

Lanivan

Since we are heading very quickly into a Gilded Age not unlike the one at the turn of the 20th century, I identify most closely with Teddy Roosvelt's progressive movement, who met the challenge quite effectively. The Reagan years were the years when the balance between corporate interests and the middle class began to distribute unequally (although I liked Reagan at the time).

As for the current IRS problems and politics, what do you think of this NYT editorial?

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/1...

Wingmaster

Okay, eliminate the shelter disguised as a non profit. Money is still going to find a way into the process, whats new! Still doesn't answer why only Tea party or conservative groups where the ones singled out during an election year! Both parties play this little game. This wreaks to high heaven and I am not gullible enough to believe mid level employees came up with this little idea to just single conservatives out.

So why does Obama act like he has the guy step down to address the issue. He's appearing to do something to the uninformed citizens and we later find out the Miller was stepping down anyway! There are dirty fingers here with gloves on so no finger prints are left.

Freshly ringing in my ears from Tuesday night "Golden country your face is so red, With all of your money your poor can be fed, You strut around and you flirt with disaster, Never really carin' just what comes after......You better stop your hidin or your country will burn, The time has come for you my friend, To all this ugliness we must put an end, Before we leave we must make a stand."

Lanivan

You heard REO Tuesday night?? They are going to be in Sterling Heights in June. But you left out..."With all your money your poor can be fed..".

Ok - I promise this is the last NYT link, until the next one. It has a lot of new info (for me, anyway). http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes...

I guess this is all part of the perks of...Living in the USA, Steve Miller Band.

Wingmaster

So now you have to read this http://www.foxnews.com/politics/...

Looks like there is more to the story than what you read on left leaning sites. If your a centrist you better get both sides to a story so you can remain in the center!

Keep pushin on!

MR. WILLIAMS

Does any U.S. Citizen ever consider that the U.S. Military also has "alleged" foreign spy's (they call Terrorists)held in secret prisons around the world that they hold for undetermined amounts of time, that get no lawyer and no Justice of any kind, even though they may be completely as innocent as the Americans other country's pick up and hold charging them with spying. It's a two way street and a lot of the time innocent human beings are the Pawns being played on the big Egotistical Military War Chess Sets. The very very sad thing is, that none of this is really necessary, but because one Country does it other Countries also do it, using each others innocent citizens as pieces of their game as if these are not the most precious entities in this world, living, breathing human beings. Just because War has taken place all through history doesn't mean it must continue forever. Now, imagine this; If countries cut back their Military operations to bare bones and redirected that money to creating a Peace Department with the same amount of personal the Military currently has only working specifically on Peace initiatives. I'm sure there would be quite a few disappointed people out there that looked forward to going to a front line itching to fire all the different types of weapons to kill people. I mean really, the military troops don't volunteer to become a solider asking to be trained on the use of killing weapons just to go to a war zone never getting to use a weapon. People beg to get into "Sniper Training" to learn how to become an expert on killing people and pride themselves on the number of people they assassinated. In the recent past there were 5 soldiers based in Kandahar that would go out together at night and break into civilian's homes and murder everyone, men, women, children, and babies. They finally got caught and charged, went through Military court and sentenced and in fact there is a Documentary film "The Dirty 5" on the Film Festival circuit about that story. Some of the soldiers interviewed stated that people have no idea how many people in the Military there are that do the exact same thing, that people would be completely shocked beyond belief if those numbers were every revealed.
