Grand Haven's Alvin Jacobson always worried that the story of the USS Flier and the memories of the crew would die with him.

Before his death in 2008, Jacobson spent many years trying to bring this story to the world.

His efforts will pay off today with the opening of USS Flier exhibit at the USS Silversides Submarine Museum in Muskegon. The exhibit highlights artifacts left behind by the crew, the survivors and the men who helped them home.

Jacobson’s family will be attending today's opening.

The permanent, multimedia exhibit was built by Kalamazoo-based Jeff Bernstein Exhibition Inc. and researched by Grand Rapids native Rebekah Hughes, author of "Surviving the Flier."

The USS Silversides Submarine Museum is at 1346 Bluff St. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from June through August.
