In response to the sighting, Dowagiac Union Schools were placed on lockdown before students arrived Monday morning and then closed. Authorities said the boy was a 13-year-old former student and he shot himself in woods near the school as police responded.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where authorities said he died. Authorities said they didn't immediately know why the boy came to the school.

The district in Cass County is about 70 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. School administrators said they plan to reopen today with extra security and counselors.
