Obama could declare disaster after Mich. flooding

Gov. Rick Snyder is asking President Barack Obama to declare a disaster in 16 counties — including Ottawa — that dealt with major flooding in April and May.

The governor made his request Friday.

The federal aid would help cover some costs incurred by state and local governments due to damage to public facilities and infrastructure. Snyder isn't asking for federal assistance for individuals or businesses.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will review the request. It will advise the president on whether a disaster or emergency declaration should be granted.

Snyder also plans to seek low-interest disaster loans for uninsured losses by homeowners, renters, businesses and nonprofit organizations in Kent County and seven neighboring counties.
