Grand Wavin' arrives late

“It’s going well now that it is getting off the ground,” said Dana Kollewehr, director of the city's Main Street Downtown Development Authority. “There was a delay due to a shortage of plywood.”

The Grand Wavin' project was announced in the spring. So far, there are only a few finished projects lining city streets.

“It is always our goal to get them out in early June,” Kollewehr said. “We’re trying to get them out and encouraging everyone to participate.”

The project features a 3-D wooden canvas in the shape of Grand Haven's two lighthouses and a wave.

The art will be displayed throughout the city all summer long. It will culminate with the ArtWalk event in September, when a community competition will take place similar to past years.

“We’ve gotten a fair number out and purchased,” Kollewehr said of the wood canvases. “Most of them are currently being worked on.”

Only about 20 canvases have been sold so far. Kollewehr hopes to have about 50 of the large art pieces on display this summer.
“So far, we’ve had many positive comments that this is perfect with the lighthouses being one of our icons,” she said. “People just have to get their creative juices flowing.”

The cost for a large Grand Wavin’ sculpture is $250. A smaller version is available for $35.

Kollewehr said one of the project's goals is to raise money for the Downtown Development Authority program.
