Senior living OK'd

Although some details need to ironed out and the state needs to kick in tax credits for the project to become a reality, Spring Lake Village Council is on board with a Mount Pleasant developer's plans for a senior housing community in the village.

Mill Point Manor, a 24-unit apartment community for seniors ages 55 and older, would be built on vacant land behind the Arby's restaurant, between Cutler and Park streets.

The village first approved the project in 2007 under the name Cutler View, but plans for the senior apartments fell off the drawing board when the economy stalled.

Developer Phil Seybert also built the Lloyd's Bayou Senior Apartments behind Orchard Market in Spring Lake Township.

Seybert said construction timing for Mill Point Manor will depend on how long it takes the state to process paperwork for the state tax credits he's requested for the low- to moderate-income apartments, similar to what is in place at Lloyd's Bayou.

“We need to have everything lined up and ducks in a row to maximize chances (of state tax credits),” he said. “We have interest in the project already, and our manager at Lloyd's Bayou is keeping a wait list for the proposed project.”

Village Manager Chris Burns said there is a need for more senior housing in the village.

“Baby boomers are coming of retirement age and seniors bring a lot of vitality to a community,” she said. “The way we treat our seniors is indicative of the fabric of the community.”

Burns said pedestrian/bike trails, libraries and other programs are assets to the senior population.

“I think he will have no problem filling it,” she said.
