Poll: Deep race division over verdict

Not surprisingly, the public reaction to George Zimmerman’s acquittal of murder and manslaughter charges in the shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin breaks strongly along racial and political lines, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released this week.

In a blog for The Hill, Jonathan Easley noted that 86 percent of blacks disagree with the jury’s not-guilty verdict, while a majority of whites (51 percent) said the jury returned the proper decision.

In addition, 87 percent of blacks said the shooting of Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, was unjustified, against only 33 percent of whites saying the same.

Easley digs deeper into the poll in his blog. To read it, CLICK HERE.

"There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs -- partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays." --former slave, educator, author and orator Booker T. Washington (1856-1915)

So Mr. Brooky, are you stoking this fire because it pays? Do you want racial harmony? How about some positive articles on race and/or what has been done in black communities to help change the destructive culture of single parent homes, drug addiction, and education. How about articles of black and white unity and common ground. Anything that does not beat the drum of division.

dyankee

Well said Wing. Our President set the tone and division of this entire case when he injected his opinion of "If I had a son he would look like Trayvon." while leaving another innocent American sitting their without our President's support for his own equal justice. Just sickening to any reasonable citizen. The reality is, if Mr. Obama had a city, it would look like Detroit because that is how he has been governing.

Mystic Michael

Since you obviously think so little of the President, why would you even care whether he's willing to offer any moral support to George Zimmerman? You can't have it both ways - even if it is the only way you can express your extreme enmity & prejudice.

Cut the crap. If President Obama were a white man, having said the things he said about the Zimmerman trial & verdict, you wouldn't have even half the problem with him as you in fact do. And you surely wouldn't feel compelled to use such a gratuitous, thinly-veiled racial slur against him, as to associate him directly with Detroit.

dyankee

Okay then, If Mr. Obama had a nephew, he would sound just like Mystic Michael.

Wingmaster

Doh!

Whatareyoutalki...

Why in the heck is this even on the tribune?
If anyone here was on the jury, please raise you hand!
No? Then all you are doing with this is throwing crap to see what sticks.

6 people found there was reasonable doubt that he had reason to defend himself with deadly force. These 6 people were chosen by the defense and the prosecutors.

This is pretty straight forward. Close the book and move on please.

Riverside

So this guy’s neighborhood has been burglarized off and on and the residents are very concerned for their safety and well-being. Neighbors agree to upkick their vigilance and overall level of awareness to watch out for each other and keep an eye out for suspicious individuals and behavior. It could be considered by an official designation such as “Neighborhood Watch”, but officially labeled or not, it is the purest form of Americans watching out for each other and being good neighbors.

So far so good.

So George Zimmerman sees what he believes is a suspicious individual in suspicious circumstances, and intelligently and responsibly pays attention and calls 9-1-1 to report what he sees to the officials. This gesture is proof positive he was not looking to do anyone harm or break any laws, but rather perform the fundamental responsibility of a neighbor who cares.

Doing nothing illegal or improper, he follows the individual while answering all the questions from the 9-1-1 operator to the best of his ability, keeping an eye on the individual so the authorities can hopefully intercept and determine exactly what is going on.

For reasons unknown, though I will comment on momentarily, after expressing racism and hostility on the phone to a friend in response to being followed, the suspect now changes course and turns towards George and immediately initiates a hostile verbal confrontation that quickly escalate to a violent physical assault. Within seconds, the suspect has overwhelmed George, has gained the advantage on top, pinning George to the ground, and further escalates the assault to deadly force by smashing George’s face, breaking his nose, and violently slamming his skull onto the concrete with all his youthful athleticism.

George screams frantically for help as Trayvon Martin pummels his face and head furiously, inflicting damaging and potentially life threatening wounds. Fearing for his life and about to lose consciousness at the hands of an enraged, violent attacker, George Zimmerman does what anyone who wishes to live would do, and he reaches for his concealed handgun, firing a single shot to neutralize the deadly force being wreaked upon him.

This represents the purest form of self-defense there is. It is exactly why people who believe in good over evil carry a gun to protect themselves from the well documented violence that plagues our country, in order to save our lives from a life threatening attack. Period.

Based on all evidence available to them, the professional law enforcement officers did not hold George Zimmerman on charges later that night. They saw it for what it was: cut and dried self-defense. And so it was for a few weeks until the race-baiting industry saw an opportunity to further the racist careers of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, the Black Panthers. President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, et al, who then swept down on the Florida community refusing to admit that the 17-year-old dope smoking, racist gangsta wannabe Trayvon Martin was at all responsible for his bad decisions and standard modus operendi of always taking the violent route.

With an obvious racist chip on his shoulder, referencing the neighborhood watch guy as a “creepy azz cracker” to his fellow racist female friend who admitted under oath that that is how non-blacks are referred to normally in their circles, Trayvon had no reason not to attack, because it was the standard thug thing to do. See Chicago any day of the week. With nearly 700 examples of this truism played out in Chicago in 2012 alone, no one can possibly dispute the recent surge in black racism increasing throughout Barack Obama’s presidency.

To attempt to claim otherwise is a laughable lie. The jury got it right, and non-racist America rejoices that there is still common sense, honesty and decency aware of identifying justice in this country. America also believes that the entire prosecutorial team should be ashamed of themselves and disbarred for ignoring the obvious and kowtowing to the pure racism that forced the politically correct lie that only black lives killed by non-blacks matter, which is why there are no headlines, no protests, no prosecutions and no Barak Obama or Eric Holder meddling in the nonstop black-on-black slaughter in their gun-free zone of Chicago.

Martin Luther King Jr. is rolling over in his grave that he sacrificed his life for the cause of judging people by the content of their character instead of the color of their skin, as so many of his own race carry in in self-destructive behavior while professional race mongers blame everything on racism. It is painful and heartbreaking to say and write this, but horrifically it is true. Blacks kill more blacks in a weekend in Chicago than the evil, vile Ku Klux Klan idiots did in 50 years. Truly earth shattering insane. And not a peep from Obama or Holder. Tragic.

The only racism on that night was perpetrated by Trayvon Martin, and everybody knows it.

Here’s the lesson from all this, America: Teach your children to not attack people for no good reason whatsoever. Conduct yourself in a responsible, civil manner, and everything will be just fine. Try to kill someone and that someone just may be exercising his or her Second Amendment rights and you could get shot. It’s called self-defense, and it is the oldest, strongest and most righteous instinct and God-given right known to man. - See more at: http://rare.us/story/nugent-zimm...

You couldn't be more correct, and my, what a frustrated writer. I'm confident you will "share" again in the future and thank you in advance for that, but please condense a little and think of multiple paragraphs. More people will read your entire post if you are more concise with visual pauses (paragraphs).

ru, edited. Glad you liked the article from Ted Nugent.

Very nice, thank you!

Mystic Michael

Elegant sophistry, R. But conveniently enough for you, your "narrative" just happens to have a few holes in it:

1) George Zimmerman was explicitly instructed, several times, by the 911 dispatcher to NOT follow after Trayvon Martin, but insisted upon doing so anyway. Clearly Zimmerman was looking for trouble.

2) Referring to a dead black teen as "pot-smoking" and "a thug" is prejudicial in the extreme - particularly when Trayvon Martin is no longer here to defend himself or his own character. (For the record, smoking marijuana does not incite one to violent behavior. If anything, quite the opposite.)

3) Your little story makes no mention of Trayvon's right to defend himself from the inherent threat of a person who aggressively stalked him, then accosted him with a loaded firearm.

4) The scenario for Zimmerman's self-defense that you've just recited comes directly from Zimmerman's lawyers - and remains only a fable. There is no iron-clad way of corroborating it - or of discrediting it either - because the only other person who could do so is now dead, courtesy of George Zimmerman himself. How convenient for Zimmerman.

5) If the black teens in Sanford have a habit of referring to white people as "crackers", doesn't the behavior of people like George Zimmerman provide ample reason why they would? (Not condoning the use of racial epithets. Merely illustrating how one's experience & social conditioning could explain it.)

6) Clearly the initial police investigation was deeply flawed - flawed enough so that crucial evidence was either missed or ignored - and the Sanford police chief soon lost his job over it. Another crucial factual omission.

7) George Zimmerman was found not guilty, not because he didn't illegally shoot & kill Trayvon Martin, but because Zimmerman's defense team succeeded in characterizing the victim as the "real" perpetrator. A victim who, once again, is no longer here to present a countervailing view. How incredibly convenient.

8) Referencing Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton, along with President Obama & Attorney General Holder, in the same sentence, is provocative, inflammatory & prejudicial in the extreme. None of those individuals had any influence upon what happened in the courtroom - and you know it. Barack Obama & Jesse Jackson have about as much in common with each other politically as Bernie Sanders & Wayne LaPierre.

And the Black Panthers? Seriously, dude? Are you still living in 1969?

How dare you present yourself as some kind of paragon of color-blindness & racial harmony! How dare you invoke the legacy of Martin Luther King to do it! Dr. King may indeed be "rolling over in his grave" all right - but because of the way in which his words & his intentions have been deliberately twisted, subverted, and ripped out of context - by the likes of you!

Even the devil himself is prepared to quote scripture...if he thinks it likely to advance his deceptive agenda...

Apparently you never looked at the link MM, not my words. So don't blame me for something I simply copied and pasted from Ted Nugent.

Look at the link, his words not mine. http://rare.us/story/nugent-zimm...

Vladtheimp

MM displays the logic of someone living in a place where the leading candidates for Mayor are a guy who was sexting as a Congressman, lied about it, got married, and continued sexting young women; a guy who paid hookers while he was Governor of the state and resigned, and a hooker who sold the governor young women - enuff said.

Notice how he has twisted the facts, which your article recited fairly and reasonably, and simply disagrees with the police, the eyewitness, Zimmerman's neighbors and most important, the jury, which was not permitted by the biased judge to hear about the real Trayvon in his own words, in his own pictures, about his possession of stolen property, etc. ad nauseum .

This is the only response to such a person: http://youtu.be/5j2F4VcBmeo

Mystic Michael

The fact that you have nothing more "potent" with which to smear me than some lame, half-baked, guilt-by-association fallacy - and based only upon the personal excesses of a couple of politicians who happen to live in the same city as I do - simply speaks volumes about your pettiness, your rhetorical emptiness, and your growing irrelevance, Vlad.

Vladtheimp

Guess you missed the " he has twisted the facts, which your article recited fairly and reasonably, and simply disagrees with the police, the eyewitness, Zimmerman's neighbors and most important, the jury, which was not permitted by the biased judge to hear about the real Trayvon in his own words, in his own pictures, about his possession of stolen property, etc. ad nauseum." part of the comment, which was the nexus to the link that you can't handle the truth. Bye Bye.

Wingmaster

Too bad most will miss this retort, maybe the pop up virus we see it eventually.

Mystic Michael

You're right: I never clicked on the link.

But now that you mention it, thanks for the warning. Ted Nugent literally makes me sick to my stomach.

MR. WILLIAMS

Riverside, quite an observant, introspective nonpartisan, nonracial point of view, Just The Facts. I like it!

retired DOC

People need to remember that Martin was a big 6'2" with a history of assaulting others. Zimmerman was only 5'9" and following Zimmerman. Facts make it appear that Martin started the fight when he decked Zimmerman. Zimmerman was pinned to the ground and could not retreat.

zwesterhouse

I for one enjoy stand your ground legislation. Now maybe certain people who love to attack others will now think twice. If a person attacks somebody - well then they have to live with the outcome.

Vladtheimp

It;s not new, liberals are just pretending it is: Stand Your Ground: The “New” Self-Defense Doctrine That’s 136 Years Young http://legalinsurrection.com/201...

Lanivan

Is this the intended link? Other then some juvenile, smart aff, and arrogant self-aggrandizement, I see nothing about SYG.

Vladtheimp

Bad link, sorry. Here is the correct one: http://legalinsurrection.com/201....

Glad you appreciated the humor in the bad link -oops-my bad- no sense of humor where Teh One is concerned - too bad about that because your sense of humor otherwise is exemplary.

Verification word pnmpf

Lanivan

It appears Mr. Branca stands to gain most handsomely from Stand Your Ground laws and cases, especially with those heavily spotlighted such as the Zimmerman case, having a self-defense media business. He states, and I ask - in the Zimmerman case, who really was the aggressor, and who was the defender?

"Highly aggressive acts of violence carry an inherent threat of death occurring to one of the participants, but the two participants are not operating on the same moral plane. The innocent defender is right in his use of defensive force, the aggressor is not. The innocent defender did not choose the initiation of violence, the aggressor did. If death must strike one of them, it is infinitely better that it strike down the thug than the law-abiding citizen".

Sorry about the lack of humor with certain subjects - having a background with lots of teasing and joking (with me often the target), I have a certain sensitivity to humor that turns mean, tinged with anger and bias, and is unjustified.

Can't figure out the word verification - a possible option: p(ai)n (i)mp (as)f ? What's your take?

Vladtheimp

I thought of Spitzer.

Lanivan

Now I'm seeing it...

One of the greatest right as an American is a jury trial by your peers. To have so many people disagree including the President of the United States is very troubling. What the leaders should be saying black and white is that apparently we don't have all the information that the jury did. The prosecution did not prove that with out reasonable doubt. Six fellow Americans found him not guilty. He's not guilty, supposed leaders in the community and our President needs to stop acting like he is guilty....he is not guilty!!!

Mystic Michael

Right. He's not guilty in the same way that O.J. Simpson is not guilty of having murdered Nicole Simpson & Ronald Goldman.

H M

The President did not disagree with the verdict. Get your facts straight.
