U.S. 31 and M-37 presently are combined into a single thoroughfare that runs near downtown and along Grand Traverse Bay.

Local leaders want to bring the matter to the Michigan Department of Transportation's attention as the agency begins preparing its next five-year plan this fall.

Garfield Township Supervisor Chuck Korn said there are several possible ways a bypass could be constructed, including rerouting the two highways to run south and east of Traverse City.

That would require building a connector road that has long been a contentious issue as leaders have debated how to deal with heavy traffic in town.

Do not hesitate, do not wait but start yesterday, for the God MDOT moves extremely slow and only in there best interest. Read the fine print and between the lines before agreeing, and do not accept anything that will effect the downtown in the long term. Good luck.
