Ferrysburg fireworks restricted

City Council lit the fuse on a new fireworks ordinance that will limit the days and times private fireworks can be ignited within Ferrysburg city limits.

The ordinance, which is similar to legislation recently adopted by the City of Grand Haven and the townships of Grand Haven and Spring Lake, takes effect next week.

Violators will be subject to fines of up to $500.

“We modeled our ordinance after other communities,” City Manager Craig Bessinger said. “After hearing the feedback they got from residents, City Council wanted to move forward with this.”

Bessinger said because of the uniformity in neighboring municipalities, police officers should have an easier time enforcing the rules.

After state lawmakers made sweeping changes to Michigan's fireworks law last year, they backed off a bit this year to allow local municipalities to place restrictions on sky shows.

The first-ever Ferrysburg fireworks ordinance will allow residents and guests to discharge fireworks before 1 a.m. on the day of, before and after the following holidays, as required by the state: New Year's Day, Presidents Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Coast Guard Festival Saturday, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Spring Lake Village Council approved a fireworks ordinance late last summer that did not include Coast Guard Festival Saturday as a permitted date.

“City Council discussed it quite a bit,” Bessinger said. “Coast Guard Festival honors the Coast Guard and they didn't want to take away the use of fireworks on that celebration.”
