After making it through the initial blind audition for the NBC-TV reality singing series, contestants received advice from their coaches and celebrity advisers before "battling" a teammate to remain on the team.
The Fruitport native went up against teammate E.G. Daily during the show’s "battle round," which aired Tuesday night. Cerniglia and Daily sang a duet of “Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About.”
In the end, Cerniglia’s coach, country singer Blake Shelton, selected Daily to remain on the team and advance to the "knockout round."
Daily was the voice for the Tommy Pickles character in the “Rugrats” cartoon series and the Buttercup character in “The Powerpuff Girls," among many other TV and movie credits.
Cerniglia said he can’t say enough good things about the people he met while participating with the show.
“This has been by far the most incredible musical experience of my life," he said.
Cerniglia said it was "crazy" working with Shelton and his team’s adviser, Cher, who surprised him with her insight of his voice. He said the coaches were continually impressed with his abilities.
As Cerniglia begins new endeavors, he said he will listen to his coaches’ advice about allowing the "natural grit" in his voice to shine through and to seek other music genres that he might not otherwise be comfortable with.
As the 2006 Fruitport High School graduate sharpened his singing skills doing the TV show, he also used the national attention to raise awareness about Batten’s disease and cystic fibrosis, challenges that two of his sisters face.
Cerniglia said his family — including his fiancée, Angie Parks — have always supported him, and he didn’t know if he would have the passion or understanding about time being precious if it wasn’t for his family.
