A film crew from the "Steve Harvey Show" recently traveled to Grand Haven to capture a surprise playground dedication at the state park for the late Andy Fox. Fox drowned in 2003 in a rip current off the Grand Haven shore.

The crew interviewed Fox’s mother, Vicki Cech, at her Grand Haven Township home and in front of a studio audience for the show.

For the past 10 years, Cech and family and other community members have dedicated time to educate the public about water safety.

A field producer for the show said a date hasn’t been set for the episode's broadcast. The "Steve Harvey Show" airs on the local ABC station.

Cech was surprised by the park playground dedication and the exposure by the TV show, but said “it’s all about the awareness." She said the recognition validates the work she and others have done.

“The true ultimate goal is no drowning,” she said.

Each summer for the past 10 years, the Grand Haven beach has been home to a Beach Survival Challenge in which teams must correctly answer questions about water safety and throw life rings, among other activities.

The Grand Haven pier is also equipped with life rings, signs warning about rip currents and a call box hooked up to Central Dispatch.

Jaime Spencer, Andy Fox’s sister, said her mother’s appearance on the show is exciting because they will be spreading their water safety message to a larger audience than they’ve been able to reach in the past.

“We’re really excited about it,” Spencer said. “I think having something outside of the general area about what’s going on is amazing.”
