The stretch of interstate running from Walker in western Kent County to 16th Avenue in eastern Ottawa County will be named the "Officer Trevor Slot Memorial Highway" under the legislation signed Tuesday.

Slot was a nine-year veteran of the Walker Police Department. He was killed in 2011 on the stretch of I-96 while helping police chase a pair of armed bank robbers. Slot pulled over his car to deploy stop sticks when the suspects struck and killed him.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Robert VerHeulen, R-Walker.
