Dutch ride 3’s to road victory over Bucs

As the Grand Haven and Holland boy’s basketball teams walked to their respective locker rooms for halftime of Friday night’s contest, the referees approached the scorer’s table.

“It looks like this one is headed to overtime,” one of them said.

The game was tied at 23 at that point, but three different 3’s plagued the Buccaneers after halftime: the third quarter, the three point shot, and point guard Dante Hawkins, who wears No. 3, all of which helped Holland score a 56-49 win.

Hawkins was the first player to find the basket in the second-half, his drive to the hoop put the Dutch (2-0) up 25-23.

A reverse layup in transition a few possessions later gave Holland a 27-23 lead.

The Bucs stayed within four for a majority of the quarter, until Hawkins hit a 3-pointer with a little over three minutes left. The trey put the Dutch up 34-27.

Grand Haven came out of halftime ice cold, missing their first seven shots of the quarter.
