Traverse City approves summer festival limit

Traverse City commissioners have approved a proposal that would limit to four the number of summer festivals in a popular downtown park along Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay.

City commissioners voted Monday amid a local debate over whether festivals are occupying "Open Space" for too long during the busy tourist season. Some backing the change say the limit won't hurt tourism.

Commissioners also said the new limit would address residents' concerns about the number of large events in a reasonable manner.

The National Cherry Festival and the Traverse City Film Festival would still be allowed following the change, in addition to one event in June and another in August. The policy also would ban events at the Open Space on Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Bad idea. Let's hope that type of thinking doesn't catch on here. Michigan has a bleak economy and we need to do everything we can to bring in every dollar. Limiting festivals is contrary to that goal.

Oh I don't know, maybe they're trying to strike a balance between unbridled greed and quality of life? It's not like there aren't other things to do up there besides go to the festival of the week.

Also, it is only limiting the events at that particular open space. It says nothing about the other venues that are just outside of town. The residents want some quiet enjoyment of the area they are paying taxes to upkeep.

They can have all the festivals they want - just as long as they don't impede the route to Boone's.

O, the whitefish dinners! The homemade onion rings! Now you've done it, Barry.

I googled this place and then added it to my list of places to hit next time we can afford to go up that way, after the first night's dinner at the Red Mesa Grill of course....
