The Hollyhock is a 225-foot sea-going buoy tender homeported in Port Huron, Mich., and was conducting an ice escort at the time of the collision.

At about 10:45 a.m., the Hollyhock was breaking ice in front of the motor vessel Mesabi Miner when the collision occurred. The cutter's crew reported significant damage to the stern and fantail, as well as two punctures in the hull about 20 feet above the waterline. The crew of the Mesabi Miner, en route to Gary, Ind., reported a 12-inch crack in the bow about 4 feet above the waterline and said the bow is pushed in about 8 to 12 inches.

No pollution or injuries have been reported concerning the incident and neither vessel has reported any flooding.

The Hollyhock arrived and moored up in St. Ignace, Mich., at about 8:30 p.m., Sunday. It is currently undergoing a complete damage assessment. The Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay, a 140-foot ice-breaking tug, homeported in St. Ignace, escorted the Hollyhock as a precaution.

The Mesabi Miner will unload its cargo in Gary, Ind., and then the damage and planned repairs will be assessed.

I wonder if the captain of the Mesabi Minor was ticketed for following to close for conditions

Sounds to me like the Mesabi Minor was "tail gating". Why did Coast Guard City USA headline this as if it was the Coast Guard's error?

What a deplorable headline for the Tribune to publish.
It's a totally misleading and incorrect statement. How could any body knowing what took place come up with that. How about "Freighter collides with Coast Guard cutter"
OH, wait I forgot this is Grand Haven. Making truthful and accurate statements isn't important. Just say what ever you think would sound the best to other people.

Along those lines I've always wondered why our athletic teams are called the Buccaneers. It's a cool name and mascot/logo, but it seems a bit odd for Coast Guard City, USA to have the traditional enemy of the Coast Guard as our mascot.

Excellent point. Could have read "freighter collides with Coast Guard cuttet" since the Mesabi was trailing the cutter.

The. headline is very misleading or did the cutter back into the frieghter. I wonder who pays the deductible. I also would like to know if the coast guard is out there bustin a path for these late season shippers are they buying the fuel and paying wages and overhead for the service of this cutter, or are we paying for this service. If this is a freebee i want a ride in that chopper this summer. Maybe up to TC for lunch and back.

Obviously CGC Hollyhock was struck by the Mesabi Miner. If you watch the freighter traffic on the Great Lakes, you will see that the Coast Guard Cutters are in the lead and freighters follow behind. It's too bad that the Hollyhock is out of commission for a while. With this cold we're having the freighters are experiencing a lot of ice, more so now than the previous few years. They will run their routes until they are no longer able and start back up again in March.
