thanks for the shots, your a brave soul to walk out there on the pier, this weather

homesick

Thanks, for the pictures...I miss the lake. However, I am not missing your cold and snow. The sunny blue skies are grand this time of year here in AZ. I am looking forward to spring and summer back in my MI.

Very nice photos! I hate the cold but would love to someday kayak around the pier in January once I get the courage to do so.

One great view this time of year is to go up to the top of the "back hill" at the Ski Bowl and look down at the icebergs floating out in the lake. Especially on a sunny day when the sun glints off the ice and the water it looks really cool.

great lakes chick

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm certainly going to check that out.

I am new to town. Where is ths Ski Bowl you talk about? Thanks

The Ski Bowl is at Mulligan's Hollow near the YMCA in Grand Haven (1 Y Drive if you want to map it). The part you can see from the Y parking lot is the "front hill", and the "back hill" can be reached on skis by skiing down the back slope of the front hill and riding the tow rope up the back hill, assuming it's open (requires more snow than the front hill). On foot, you can get up there by parking in the little lot between the Y and the GH water treatment plant and walking along the gated road, then following it up the hill to the water tanks. I haven't been up there for a few years since I moved out of the area, and I heard sections of the road were washed out at some point by a burst water pipe, so it might not be the same back there nowadays.

I take the dogs out for hikes up that way frequently and the old road up to the top of the hill is in as good of shape as it ever has been. It was a mess right after the pipe burst, but they did a good job of cleaning the mess up over the summer.

It's a beautiful area up there, right in the middle of the city, pretty special place. I've seen deer up there, a family of opossums, a porcupine and not too long ago saw a fox walking down a path. I was sitting there quietly taking. some pics when he just strolled by. Thought it was a small dog at first until he got closer. Pretty cool area.

Glad to hear they fixed up the road! That's a great area to explore and see the sights, and it definitely feels like a wild and somewhat remote area even though you're right in town. I saw a huge bald eagle perched on top of one of the ski rope support poles (Ski Bowl was closed at the time) and he would swoop down to grab small animals scurrying around hundreds of feet down the hill. Wish I'd had my camera!

Welcome to Grand Haven! Make sure to check out everything this town has to offer all year long (especially the fountain in the summer).
