Road warriors

It’s just starting to get light when Matt Schindlebeck switches trucks and heads out to Ferrysburg’s North Shore area to plow drifts.

A day after arctic weather swept through the Tri-Cities, it’s time for some cleanup work.

Schindlebeck smiles as he fires up the diesel engine on the 2007 International dump truck.

“This is definitely a fun job,” he said. “Dodging mailboxes, slinging snow, making the road safe for motorists.”

The Ferrysburg Department of Public Works employee has been on the job five years, and running the plow is one of his favorite tasks.

He tunes into sports talk radio or classic rock music for the cruise around the area.

“I’ve got one of the best routes. It’s very scenic,” Schindlebeck points out as he steers the truck past North Beach Park on North Shore Estates Road.

“We see a lot of eagles, see a lot of deer — hawks and coyotes occasionally,” he said.

“There’s usually deer lying down under those pine trees,” he said, pointing to an area a little east of the Coast Guard Park entrance.

Schindlebeck started his morning in a 1-ton dump truck with a spreader and cleaned the parking lot and sidewalks at Ferrysburg City Hall.

Shortly before 8 a.m., he jumped into the plow truck to work on snowdrifts and to push the snow back farther from the road. Schindlebeck said it’s important to push the snow back when it’s fresh.

Say no to new taxes

A tough route to keep clear with the wind blowing off of the lake but he does an excellent job keeping the road open. Many thanks from North Shore residents.

TooMuch

Can't say enough good things about the plow guys keeping up in this horrible weather!!! Great attitudes too! Thank you!
