Bill lets lawyers opt out of Michigan state bar

New legislation would make lawyers' membership in the State Bar of Michigan voluntary.

Attorneys licensed to practice law must be members of the bar and pay annual dues. But Republican Sen. Arlan Meekhof of West Olive said the bar association has become more "political" and not all lawyers agree with its actions.

Meekhof said Thursday that the bill's intent isn't to let attorneys' off the hook from fees for attorney discipline system and other bar functions. Conservatives first proposed a "right-to-work" concept for lawyers at a Republican policy conference in September.

The bar has upset some by urging mandatory disclosure of those financing judicial campaign ads.

Group Executive Director Janet Welch said a mandatory professional association "is a great no-cost benefit to Michigan's taxpayers."

Between this and Meekhof's law to 'protect' secret campaign contributions from public disclosure, I think he's taking too many half-measures and over-regulating the market for campaign cash. He should just let the free market decide, get government out of the way, and legalize direct cash payments in exchange for judicial rulings.

Lawyers have the power to better society through the use of the law. I am always offended by gross generalizations that demonize lawyers, and think those who make those generalizations are most likely envious of them. The Bar not only assures that lawyers are knowledgeable enough to fulfill their duties as attorneys, but also serves as an ethical standard bearer. I would never give my business to an attorney who was not a member of the Bar!

I would not say the bar is a very good determiner of ethical behavior. There are some actions of that organization that are simply despicable. If they would get out of politics that would be a start.
