After several rounds of tiny hamsters and gerbils rolling down the multi-colored track, Spots ran full steam toward the finish line.

Sierra Sikkema’s Spots claimed the gold medal during the Winterfest Race of Kings: Hamster/Gerbil Race on Saturday.

Conner Brouwer’s Charlie and Chloe Delma’s Kevin brought home silver medals. The consolation round was a nail bitter as Bayton Davis’ Cuddles pulled ahead against Bella Studeman’s Guinea Pig and Kaden Moore’s Zeba.

The race drew a large crowd as six children entered their beloved pets into the fun competition.

A bright smile filed Sikkema’s face as the gold medal was slipped around her neck. The 6-year-old said she didn’t have any doubts about Spots taking home top honors.

“Because she’s so fast,” Sikkema said.

Prior to the race, Spots practiced getting her pink ball rolling so she would be in prime form against the competition.

First-time race participant Delma said she also let her pet, Kevin, practice rolling his orange ball up and down the hallway in her family’s home.

The White Pines Middle School student said she was excited about the competition.

The fun of last year’s competition brought back Brouwer and his hamster, Charlie. Brouwer, who won last year, said he didn’t do anything special to prepare Charlie for the race in hopes he would be ready and anxious to run.

“We don’t let him roll around before,” he said.
