Snyder OKs new turn signal for bicyclists

Michigan bicyclists are getting another way to signal a right turn.

Jan 29, 2014

Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday signed legislation giving bicyclists the option of signaling a right turn by extending their right arm horizontally. Until now, they could signal a right turn with an L position by extending their left arm upward.

Snyder says the "common-sense" law will make roads safer. The old 1949 law was passed at a time most automobiles lacked turn indicators and motorists had to use hand signals.

The bill's sponsor is Republican Rep. Anthony Forlini of Macomb County's Harrison Township. Forlini says most drivers are unfamiliar with bicyclists' traditional right-hand turn gesture.

The law is the first approved by lawmakers this year to win Snyder's signature.

of course, the Right turn, because no one wants to go left anymore.

Very important to Michigan's economy, lack of jobs, & high unemployment (2nd in the nation), way to go Republican lawmakers & Snyder. Holy crap.

Hey, don't complain. At least the damage he's doing is minimal in this case. Better he spend his time on this stuff than gutting the rest of state constitution and scaring away any chance for economic improvements.

Someone needs to tell that putz there's more to this state than Detroit.

pike84

You guys are funny. Snyder will win in a landslide...

LessThanAmused

He probably will. I haven't heard of anyone even beginning to offer up a challenge and it's pretty hard to get the guy already there out unless he's really a screw-up.
I offer up my #1 example, Bush Jr. If he could get reelected for a second term what hope have we here for a different outcome?

Mark Schauer is the Democrat challenger. He is a well-known politician from the Battle Creek area. He is widely supported by the DGA, Michigan Dems, etc - You will be hearing about him more as the months go by.

I was hoping Fieger would take another shot at it.

AtomicRooster

I wouldn't be too sure about that. He has made some very unpopular moves in this state. Too much of a businessman. Tell me all the ways YOU have benefited by him. I would be interested to hear what you have to say other than hearing your stupid comments here. The top 10 worst states in the Union for public education happened to me Michigan on that list because he has made shambles of our public education. Just another Engler in sheep's clothing if you ask me. How do you like your car insurance rates since your buddy took office? Talk to your agent about how your buddy has escalated rates in this state. Not the insurance companies fault. Your buddy again. He made 4 rate hikes in ONE YEAR. No accountability for it either. That extra money your buddy said was for road repairs. Yea Right! You about break your axles on your car riding around in this state. Talk to some retirees too how your buddy hit their pensions. Yea what a great guy. And now he is welcoming and encouraging more immigrants to come to our state. Like we don't have enough on our plates already? And most of them are ILLEGAL immigrants with criminal records larger than our National Debt. Just what Michigan DOES NOT need. He is so out of touch with reality it isn't even funny. He just keeps reminding me NOT to vote for him in November 2014. Never voted for him in the first time. I knew trouble when I seen it. ABS=Anybody But Snyder.

Add this to the growing list of Snyder's many important accomplishments. On a side note, I sometimes prefer to signal my turns with the traditional one finger raised gesture.

AtomicRooster

Accomplishments? Did you eat a bowl of stupid for breakfast this morning? Sure sounds like it. He will go down in Michigan history as the Governor who is so out of touch with reality it isn't even funny. He hasn't hit a home run since he has been in office.

It was an old law that should have been cleared up decades ago. Cycling is on the rise, it is good education and clarification for both cyclists and motorists.

I can sleep so much better at night knowing I can now use my right arm to signal turning right. Not that I have seen a single cyclist use any hand signals for years. I would like to know how I am going to signal a right turn on my motorcycle now though. It's going to be difficult to extend my right hand while keeping on the throttle.

Good point Dave. This is just one reason why new laws should be discussed by a committee of people before becoming laws, so we get more than one point of view and don't end up creating as many, if not more, problems then we solve.

Now if only they could develop a way to tell whether a politician is going to move to the right after being elected. All too often, they run on a platform of continuing straight or making a left turn, only to get into office and find out that making right turns pays a lot better.

happycamper

turn signals for cyclist, really, i have not seen any cyclist use hand signal for many years or use crosswalks or street signals and any kind of rules they should be observing, they seam to rule the road above anyone, how many time have you had a cyclist run thru the intersection, watch guys im coming thru, get out of the way, i dare you, i will sue you, rick snyder is wasting his time on such prival issues when our local police can not control those idiots

LessThanAmused

Wow, another hater of things they don't understand. You don't sound like a very happy camper to me.....

Can you explain what a "prival" issue is? I looked it up in my online dictionary and there was no word listed there using that collection of letters.

bigdeal

adj. privial: slang combination of 'primarily trivial'

LessThanAmused

Thanks for the edification BD! I don't care what they say, you've got a brain! :-)

happycamper

things i dont understand ?, i lived in this town for 64 years and seen people disregard traffic rules all the time driving bicycles and its not getting any better, much like the crazy drivers of other means of transportation, i hate driving these days, your right, prival means small, seems such a small or not so important rule, no really cares, so about that !!!

LessThanAmused

So, just for the record, you don't get to make up words. There is no prival in the Merriam Webster Dictionary. I think maybe you might mean trivial, but far be it for me to put words in your mouth. Given the amount of grammatical errors in your posts I think you'd be better served to worry less about bicyclists and more about using the English language.

We're about the same age, so we were schooled the same way, during the same era. So really, unless you were hiding behind a door during English class there's no excuse for that mess.

This is a writing forum. If you want to get a point across, write so we don't have to decipher each sentence and then try to reassemble it in an order that makes sense. I have no patience or sympathy for people our age who never took the time to learn how to read and/or write correctly. Capitalize your I's....occasionally use a period.

End of sermon.

happycamper

ok, you got me, thats the difference between a collge boy and a farm boy, i have no explanation, i will just leave the comments to the experts

bigdeal

Don't go Happy, LTA just likes to preach. Don't take it personal. You can make up any words you want, and you don't have to hit the shift when you hit I. That's OK. Your opinion counts, no matter what you get called. Have some thick skin and carry on! Heck, I have been told I have no brain, bigdeal!

watchingyou

Yeah, I'm with Biggy here. Don't go. Not many of us are really serious enough to take us seriously. Bigdeal, we call you brainless, the Neurologist said you don't have a brain. Happy, the Shift key is the one that makes the letters big. It's the key with an arrow pointing up. :)

bigdeal

That's true, they did a catscan on me and found nothing, not even a cat!

LessThanAmused

No, you missed the point. I challenged you to improve, not leave. Your opinion is just as important and just as valid as anyone else's here...does the old saying, anything worth doing is worth doing right" ring a bell? Don't give up because someone challenged you, improve bud, it's never too late as long as your still breathing.

...and for the record, I didn't complete high school in the traditional way and I didn't go back to college until I was 30. I taught myself for the most part because the school system at the time failed me.....college boy / farm boy, makes no difference. I grew up out in the country and worked on the neighbor's farm whenever I could. I'd much rather live on a farm than in town, but never had the money to be able to afford a farm.......

Blow me off as preaching if you want, but that was not my intent.

bigdeal

your words: end of sermon

LessThanAmused

da**, I thought I edited that out....oh well. You got me I guess.

Preach has such a negative conotation to it that most of the time the message gets lost.

Guess I'll have to work on that. Accusing me of preaching is just too much irony for me to bear. :-O

jlebrasseur

I actually do signal while out on my bike. I also follow the rules of the road, yet I am constantly passed way too closely or honked at. I even got run over by a driver that was not paying attention.

And one more 'I'... I capitalize my 'I's' and sentences...

watchingyou

He's still trying to figure out this new fangled keyboard thing. It's almost impossible to hold down shift and hit "I" with the pointer finger.

openears

The laws favor the drivers not the riders. If you were to run a stop sign in front of a GH officer you will get a ticket. They don't hesitate to pull over cyclists.

openears

I signal also. I signal to vehicles and bicycles alike. The change in the law may encourage others to start doing the same. I stop at stop signs and traffic lights. I put a foot down and turn the handlebars sideways so that everyone is clear I am not moving. Half the time I do this cars try to wave me through anyways, but I usually hold my ground and wave them through. Many of us that ride understand the rules of the road and are also your friendly neighbors.
