Spring Lake boys defeat Coopersville in overtime to capture another district title

The Spring Lake boys basketball team was not supposed to win a second straight district championship.

Not after losing four senior starters off of last year’s squad.

Not after losing four straight games to start this season.

Not after blowing a 41-29 lead in the district title game and having to head into overtime with all the momentum in the opposition’s favor.

But win a second straight district championship is just what the Lakers did on Friday night, defeating Coopersville 69-60.

Lakers’ coach Bill Core was a believer through it all.

“My biggest task over Christmas was keeping their confidence,” said Core, who made the motto for this year’s team, ‘Defend the Titles,’ referring to both a conference and district championship. “The bottom line is, since Christmas we’re 17-2. You can’t take that away from our guys.

“Tonight was a battle. I can’t think of a fan who didn’t get their money’s worth tonight.”
