Workers win trial over pay for putting on gear

A jury says an Ottawa County meatpacker violated federal law by not paying workers for putting on and taking off safety wear.

The case involves two-dozen people who worked at a former Sara Lee Corp. factory near Zeeland. Attorney Matt Turner said the company should have paid the workers for putting on and taking off boots and equipment, before and after their shifts.

A jury in Grand Rapids federal court ruled in favor of the workers last week, although a financial award hasn't been determined.

Sara Lee spun off Hillshire Brands in 2012, and the Chicago-based company now owns the factory.

Hillshire spokesman Matthew Pakula said the company isn't commenting because the case is in court.

I would just go somewhere else to work if I didn't like the conditions or pay.

What an utterly stupid, moronic thing to say. Spoken just like someone who's never been in between a rock and hard place.

So let's not deal with the real problem.....lets just go get another job and leave the mess for the next poor smuck. There are so many reasons that might not be possible that it boggles the mind that you can't come up with one or two reasons all on your own.

So, I guess you're not a proponent of making big biz do the right thing when they can't figure it out for themselves?? Screw the workers right? They're just whining babies that don't want to work, right? as long as you get yours it's all good? Not a very christian attitude.

deuce you don't have a clue about running a business. You probably think you should get paid from the time you leave your house and return home from work. Most of these law suits are started with a ambulance chasing lawyer not unhappy workers.

happycamper

does that means you have to come in to work early to put on safety gear and do the warm up exercises, then punch in, not in my book
