Mark Dobson of the Coast Guard's office in Sault Ste. Marie said Marquette is not even on its "radar" at the moment as its cutters struggle to break the lake's extreme ice cover.

Lake Superior reportedly has its thickest ice in decades. The Great Lakes this winter have had one of the heaviest ice covers ever reported.

The Coast Guard said the cutters Katmai Bay and Alder were breaking ice in Taconite Bay, Minn., then continuing north to Thunder Bay, Ontario. The cutter Mackinaw was working to lead two ships along the Canadian shoreline toward the Soo Locks.
