Another sign of spring

A sure sign spring is here — or at least on its way — is when the snow fences come down along the highways and at the beach.

On Thursday morning, Ottawa County Road Commission workers removed a section of a snow fence from an open area along southbound U.S. 31, north of Jackson Street in Grand Haven.

“I don’t miss the snow,” said employee John Gappa of Norton Shores, as he clipped the wires holding the fence slats to the poles.

When asked if it might be a bit early to remove the protective structure, Gappa laughed.

His co-workers, Dan Karle of Spring Lake and Ian Foltz of Grand Haven, agreed that they’ve plowed more than enough snow this winter.

Gappa ran a backhoe to pull up the fence stakes after Foltz secured them with a chain. Karle kept busy rolling up the fence to haul away.

The crew was planning to head later Thursday to M-45, east of 120th Avenue in Robinson Township, where they had a quarter-mile section of fence to remove.
