Bucs’ softball scores first win of season

The Grand Haven softball team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season, shutting out Zeeland East on the road in a 2-0 victory.

Kylie Masko started for the Buccaneers, striking out eight Chix and walking only one in five innings of action.

Jordan Buckingham scored in the first inning. Buckingham hit a single and stole third, before scoring off a throwing error. In the seventh, Masko singled, scoring Kaylee Hartwell.

Hartwell earned the save by pitching the final two innings, striking out five.

Grand Haven coach Paul Masko praised his pitching duo. He said that Masko and Hartwell’s work from the mound, coupled with some solid fielding, made the difference in the close contest.

“Defense kept us in the game,” Masko said. “There were no silly mistakes.”

For Zeeland East, Brooke Leonard pitched a complete game while striking out 13-Buccaneers in the losing effort.

The Buccaneers visit North Muskegon for a doubleheader today.

Junior Varsity: The Grand Haven JV softball team (1-1) defeated Zeeland East on Wednesday, 18-5.

Jordyn Burel led the Bucs with four hits. Ashley Spencer had three hits and three runs scored. Sami Henning, Anna McWatters, Gabby Nowak each had two hits.  All 12 players reached base safely for the Bucs. Ashley Schneider was the winning pitcher, giving up four runs in four innings of work.
