Utility resumes construction of wind power project

Consumers Energy is resuming construction on a wind power project in Michigan that will expand the company's renewable energy options.

The unit of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp. broke ground last year on the project in Tuscola County's Akron and Columbia townships, about 90 miles north of Detroit. The renewed work announced Monday comes as warmer weather returns to Michigan.

Consumers Energy is urging motorists to be alert for construction traffic, since materials are coming from around the area, southeastern Michigan and other parts of the state.

The Cross Winds Energy Park will be a 105-megawatt wind farm with 62 turbines. It's expected to open in late 2014 and create about 150 construction jobs.

150 Mw when the wind is blowing enough and the turbine's really expensive maintenance has been done, this is why your rates will go up sharply to slop the pig that is wind and solar energy.

Once we are dependent or mostly, of alternative energy, i wonder how many years will it take to abandon all the coal mines and put 1000,s of coal miners out of work and close the mining towns, there will ghost be towns like Detroit.

Just read a more detailed article... seems to be going well, can't figure why people are against green energy.

Hmmmm, people its not that hard! You go to this fancy web site called Google and type in Wind Turbine manufacturing and all kinds of cool stuff comes up.

Rates are going up because of our dependence on the fossil fuels we burn to produce the electricity. Instead of some wind turbines, would you prefer many more 600 foot smokestacks spewing more mercury and other poisons into our air and water?

You tell them gh55.

So are the parts for solar panels and wind mills currently made? Don't fall for the green energy scam as it is being pursued now. A Prius still runs on coal just like a blender or a TV, find the place where you have a constant wind and constant sunshine from free machines that did not take energy from fossil fuel to manufacture and never break down or require expensive and constant maintenance in remote places and I am there with you, I love the technology but it’s not going to replace what powers our grid currently only supplement it and at a very high cost so now you still have to maintain the grid plus the new needy technology it just does not make sense, sure it’s cool but for now the only green part of green energy is money sent overseas to millionaires and billionaires who on our dime will become trillion Aires that so many in this country seem to hate. The Koch brothers know a winning horse when they see it and are involved and quietly pushing it as well so do they get their hug now?

Just like all new tech. The price is high at first. Someone needs to pay for the r and d.

The devil you know right? People always knee jerk to words like green, Eco, environmentally sound ect. Do you recall the "no mistake on the lake" people. There will always be resistance to change. I say if you don't like how this green approach is being handled. Voice a green alternative. Lack of dependency on fossil fuels/coal included as it is a needed step. If you have a better way to achieve this tell them. This may not be a perfect plan but I would welcome any step that way at this point.

I agree. we must going some direction of alternative energy, i dont have any answers to the problem, but we have been talking jobs in this country and they are slipping away from us and we are letting it happen, turbine and other parts related could be made right here in the USA, but the problem is places like china or japan can make those parts half the cost we can, i can not prove it but heard it from experts at consumers energy, right from the horses mouth where it is happening,

If everyone would get behind Wind and solar we could be making all the parts here in the us. A little less profit to put America back to work. In the long run everyone would gain. But big business wants slave labor and huge profit on each deal. Wind and solar will be our prime source of energy eventually but will be held up by the greedy. Put some of the money spent on war into this and watch it happen.

auddiebrook

If they bought us made people would complain about the cost of the project. It would end before it even started. It's a lose lose. Us = cost, non us = jobs. But the amazing natural resource of the wind the lake provides and our ability to make a good impact on our environment with it shouldn't simply be swept aside. Plus there will be jobs maintaining them for us.

Say no to new taxes

Green energy is great provided your happy paying four times your current electric rates.

skyking007

As usual some care about people and the environment and some care only about money. When I was offered the chance to go green on my electric bill, It was not four times higher. Prices will come down and our air will get cleaner. In the end the obstructionists will lose.

auddiebrook

Skyking007. I wish there was a "like" here. Consider it liked.

GH55

Our rates will get to easily be 4times what we pay now, if we don't try and develop alternative sources now!
The cost of the fossil fuels we burn to produce most of our electricity will only go up in price! The sun and the wind, no one owns those sources!
