The store has exceeded sales of its two-year-old Grand Rapids location at Knapp's Corner since it opened last week in the former Wirick’s Office Products building on Harbor Drive.

“Grand Haven has welcomed us with open arms,” said owner Karen Avery, a Chicago native. “We've noticed a big difference with Grand Haven. The customers are so nice. Everyone takes time to thank us for coming to the city. It's been a very, very nice welcoming first week.”

The beach shack atmosphere is welcoming, as well. Weathered Adirondack porch swings hang in every window so customers can people watch or catch a mosquito-free Musical Fountain performance while enjoying a frozen treat.

The toppings bar is in the shape of a boat, and a soon-to-be-finished old-fashioned soda fountain sports reclaimed Michigan barn wood.

“We took a little bit of local Grand Haven flavor and weaved it into our décor,” Avery said.

She plans to roll out made-from-scratch donuts and homemade sodas served from a restored 1920s Bastion Blessing soda fountain later this summer.

In the fall, soups and sandwiches will join the menu. Also on the to-do list is a vintage photo booth and live music.

Avery learned about the frozen yogurt craze while she vacationed in Arizona.

“We were just amazed at the whole concept that you could create your own sundae,” she said. “We ended up going to eat frozen yogurt every day on vacation, sometimes twice a day.”

Avery opened the Knapp's Corner store in 2012. At that time, it was only the second such shop in the city.
